Your unit Historian, an amateur radio operator for more than a decade, decided it might be an interesting idea to take some ham radio gear along during our deployment to Bosnia. While assigned to Camp McGovern, a small outpost near the the Croatian and Serbian borders, I set up my 135-foot-long wire antenna and HF (short wave) transceiver to enjoy the relatively unusual opportunity to contact other ham radio operators throughout Europe and the rest of the world. It turned out to be a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and share perspectives, all while trapped beneath the snowy, foggy gloom of deep winter in Eastern Europe. Pictured here is the amateur radio "QSL card" I had printed to commemorate the event. Ham radio operators exchange these cards through the mail to verify their contacts and I've already sent out more than 100 to the different stations with whom I spoke. When we returned to the U. S., a feature article about this adventure was published in the March 2000 issue of QST, a national magazine for amateur radio operators.
